Welcome to Oil Paintings by Silvio Silvestri
PLEIN AIR ART
Plein air means painting in the open or fresh air. It originated with the impressionists school of art in France as a result of two historical developments: photography and the portable oil tube in the mid 1850's. Artists such as Monet and Pissaro were no longer restricted to the studio but could venture outside to capture common everyday life vignettes. Likewise, photography captured reality well so Monet felt it better to input the artist unique impression of the subject. Therefore, light, color and atmospheric effects became more important than realism. The painting below, Monets house captures the essence of plein air showing Claude Monet garden and the house he lived in when he painted some of his best paintings.
Contemporary plein air artists start with small studies that can result in larger work or may be a final statement. Plein air painting has gained widespread appeal in the last decade in the United States where events and festivals allow the public to exchange ideas and methods with artists as they produce the artwork. These are original oil paintings using the best materials available. Enjoy my website and email me if you have any questions on prices. I accept commissions and have additional artwork in stock so if you are interested in a subject matter, email me.
